Tweets are coming to Google search results

Google has just made the announcement that they’ve struck a deal with Twitter which will bring live tweets to search results. This move spans all of the Google search platforms, including desktop, tablet, and phone, and we can expect to start seeing the new results immediately.

This is a bit of a surprise – although Google and Twitter have always played nice in the past, they’ve never made a move to work this closely together. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out, especially in light of the questions this new raises. For instance, how will this effect SEO? Will sites have a more difficult time placing highly on the search because they are not as fresh as a tweet which went out from a popular Twitter account 10 minutes ago?

We also wonder if this will have a negative effect on how Google’s search is experienced. For instance, if a person is searching for information about a topic, will they be bombarded with annoying Tweet results before they find the site which has the information they need? We’re inclined to trust Google here – they have a proven track record of innovating when it comes to their search functionality – but mistakes do happen.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out.
